I don’t just love nature scenes and portraits – I also love taking pictures of buildings, bridges, and other man made structures. Architectural Photography subjects are everywhere to be found.
I’ve always felt that it’s incredible to capture the effect that we, as a species, have on the world around us. The buildings and other structures that we build, use, and leave behind say a lot about us – and I’ve always been interested in exploring this subject through photography.
Take the below picture, for example.

In this piece, I chose to explore the contrast between the natural and the unnatural – between Mother Nature and her struggle for dominance, and mankind’s desire to overcome the forces of nature.
Is there a better metaphor for this than a bridge? With a bridge, we literally overcome the forces of nature – a rushing river, a deep ravine, a steep gully. We move above nature – and skirt her power.
In this photograph, I captured the Mackinac Bridge, one of my favorite architectural photography structures to capture. It’s starkly industrial and functional, yet maintains a unique beauty that’s truly breathtaking. From the wrought-iron understructure to the beautifully arcing suspension bridge and the gentle curve of the road, it’s truly picturesque.
And this bridge is contrasted with the raw natural world that flows under it. Flowing water and bone-cold ice lie underneath the bridge – a reminder of the world that we, as a species, are trying to overcome.
Viewed in this way, the Mackinac Bridge almost does not look impressive at all. It looks precarious – as if it could fall into the water and be reclaimed by Nature. And sometime in the future, it probably will be!
