Shooting any type of photography in Northern Michigan is a dream job, at least in my opinion. Taking images as a Petoskey Portrait Photographer is no exception. The entire area within what is often referred to as the “Gold Coast of Michigan” is loaded with fantastic shooting opportunities. Before I go any further I should mention the term “Gold Coast of Michigan” or “Michigan’s Gold Coast” is highly and vigorously debatable. I was indoctrinated to understand it ran from just South of Traverse City to North of Petoskey. Typically the deciding factor in that argument is, understandably, where the people debating actually reside. No surprise there I suppose. What I do know is that I live in Charlevoix which is a beautiful area so it MUST be in the Gold Coast.
Back to taking images as a Petoskey Portrait Photographer. Its always an enjoyable experience. Not only does the downtown area bustle with activity it is also home to many historic buildings. The hilly streets are charming and add a sense of a West Coast type of area. Petoskey throws off a very eclectic vibe for sure. When I shoot there my clients typically want images that capture all the items I’ve mentioned and more. The alleys in Petoskey are charming and absolutely full on excellent shots waiting to happen as well. The image below is a great example and while it might look like a guy standing in a dark alley to you it was everything but that to him. He has a band and we were competing shoots for the band’s artwork. He was specifically looking for the grungy, laid back vibe and this captured it perfectly. It’s one of my favorite recent Petoskey images.
Alternatively, there is obviously a lot of waterfront in that area. Public parks, dock space, common areas and much more. Certainly something for everyone anytime of the year. The diversity of the surroundings and inhabitants is amazing as well. Completing shoots as a Petoskey Portrait Photographer provides opportunities to meet young guys that are eager to market their music. It also provides opportunities to meet people like the old fisherman captured below. He is retired and loves to fish. His family commissioned me to take images of him doing just that…. fishing. I took many images of him over the course of a couple days, however, this was one of my favorites. It explains everything. Solitary fisherman heading out on a beautiful still morning enjoying his favorite past time… fishing.
