Traverse City is a great town, eclectic, dynamic, saddling Lake Michigan and the bays. It’s a cool place to hang out…
I shoot all across Michigan, with my focus being Central Lower to the Eastern Upper Peninsula. That doesn’t stop me from going anywhere in Michigan or beyond. It happens frequently. This day I had shoots in Mackinac City, Northport and Suttons Bay. All are beautiful areas; two shoots were family portraits and one a model shoot. As I was driving back to Charlevoix, I was getting close to the tall ships and scanning the area for anything to shoot. I am always scanning for an image…. Always.
There were many sailboats out and the relatively chilly weather made it even better for sailors. As I approached Apache Trout Grill on Grand Traverse Bay, I saw someone sitting on the dock. I passed the driveway and had to loop around to park. When I walked to the end of the dock, I spoke to the lone person on the dock, enjoying the day and view.
I started taking images of the bay but quickly realized she WAS the image, heading back to her I asked if she would mind me taking her picture and she agreed. Not having a business card with me, I reminded her that “Rebel Miles Photography” is the name of my business hoping she would remember and be able to see the image.
I took several images of her on the dock as I assumed she was on vacation in Traverse City, however, only one really “worked” and that is the one on this page. I took it in black and white and doing so completely changed the feel….. It looks like a cold day in October, however, it was a chilly day in August 2023. Perspective changes everything in an image.
She was a delightful person and we talked for a while. That is the BEST thing about being a photographer for me, meeting people and taking images, whether planned or not.
