Pet photography is one of my areas of expertise, and pets are some of my favorite subjects to shoot, especially with their owners. Your pets are special and unique – and it’s a true joy to figure out how to express their individuality during a photo shoot. Whether you’re interested in having your pet in a photo shoot of their own, or incorporated into a portrait, I’d be glad to help. Here’s a bit more insight into my process for shooting pets (and their owners!)
The secret to great pet photography is that pets need to be comfortable. This is one of my rules when it comes to shooting pets. Generally, I try to photograph your pets wherever they’re most comfortable. With dogs, that usually means shooting in or around your home, at one of their favorite parks, or anywhere else that your pup feels comfortable – even a photo studio! I usually try to photograph cats at home. If they’re housecats, an indoor environment is usually best. Cats are not quite as cooperative as dogs, and generally have a poor reaction to being transported to a studio environment, so it’s usually best to take their photos at home.
Comfort is absolutely essential when it comes to capturing a great portrait of your pet. If your pet is scared or uncomfortable, these negative reactions will overwhelm their own natural personality. The portrait of Yogix, a cat I photographed earlier this year, is a good example of what I’m talking about. Yogix was initially quite skittish and scared – but as he got more familiar with me, he warmed up to me, and started acting more like his natural self.
This process can take time. Often, I find that I must spend a fair amount of time – usually 30 minutes to an hour – simply getting acquainted with your pet. This allows them to see me as a non-threatening figure, even with my camera equipment in tow.
That’s really all there is to it. With my professional eye, attention to your pet’s comfort, and ability to capture their true personality, I offer fantastic pet photography services in Charlevoix, and all of Michigan. Whether you want a studio portrait, or a more natural photograph taken at home, I can help!
